Volunteer of the Month

We have hundreds of volunteers that have shared their time, heart and expertise to our organization through many many hours, sometimes through blood, sweat, and tears too.  Without our volunteers, our park and our programming would not be what it is today.  We wish we could give back to them as much as they give to us.

One way we would like to show our gratitude is by putting the spotlight on a volunteer each month.  This person just stood out to us and we would like to recognize him or her.

This month we want to recognize:

Jeanne Rawson

Volunteer of the Month

“I grew up in Ipswich, Massachusetts and went to a business college in Boston.  I have worked in administration for most of my career until moving to Augusta with my husband and young son for my husband’s career.  At that time I became a full time mom.  I have two grown children, Ben who is a lighting designer for theatre productions in Atlanta, and Morgan who is a Junior at University of Washington in Seattle.

When we moved to Augusta there were very few outdoor recreational areas and parks for our young children.  I learned about Phinizy Swamp and immediately began taking the kids for “hikes” to observe nature.  They have always loved the outdoors and this was the perfect spot.  My children quickly became involved in the organized groups for children that would meet at the park or the old Richmond Academy building downtown.

Several years ago I attended a TedX talk in downtown Augusta.  One of the speakers was a motivational speaker who touched on how to jumpstart a change in career.  It was just what I needed as I was an empty nester and looking for something to get me back out into the world.  The best advice the speaker gave was to go back to what you loved as a child.  For me that was collecting rocks, studying bugs and loving nature.  No brainer.  Then Phinizy Swamp advertised their Master Naturalist Class which I signed up for immediately.  Loved every minute of it.  After completing the program I knew I wanted to get involved and give back to the Swamp.  I have been volunteering for three years now.

I love working with the young kids from the homeschool program.  They are inquisitive, smart as a tack and enjoy exploring.  They remind me of my own kids at that age.

I am constantly “selling” Phinizy Swamp to others.  Any newcomers to Augusta that I meet, that are outdoorsy and active, immediately get directed to Phinizy Swamp and the programs offered here.

I feel like I am sharing my love for the outdoors and all the wonder it has to offer.  Having taken the Master Naturalist course, I feel like the more you learn, the more you realize how much more there is to explore and understand about our planet.  I feel like I have just tackled the tip of the iceberg.  I am so excited to see young children immersing themselves in all Phinizy Swamp has to offer.”
